GLOBE is a student run micro-finance organization operating in 6 countries around the world, providing micro-loans to budding entrepreneurs. In May 2017, I was selected among 4 others to represent GLOBE as a Fellow on their trip to Nicaragua. GLOBE's Director, Linda Sama, was completely on board with Skate. Now's mission and gave us the OK to bring some skateboards to donate to the people of Nicaragua. During our time there we visited the cities of Managua, Matagalpa, Granada, and San Juan Del Sur. Needless to say it was a life changing experience and the Nicaraguan locals absolutely loved skateboarding!
Here I am teaching a Matagalpa local, Franco, age 7, the proper foot stance for riding a skateboard.
The boys of Matagalpa take a different approach to skating using their board as a toboggan to bomb the city's dirt hills. Franco, Rafael, Antonio, and Jose.
Who said skating isn't for everyone to enjoy? This sister shreds!
Meet Marlon, age 11, he was selling fruit on the streets of San Juan Del Sur to support his family and pregnant sister. We gave him a board and brief skate lesson to support his hustle!
GLOBE Fellow Travis King bonding with some of the Matagalpa locals.
Some of our hand painted skateboards, donated to the skaters of Nicaragua!
You're never too old or too young to give skateboarding a shot!
Meet Margarita and Marcelo! Margarita is a borrower of GLOBE's micro-loan program. With a loan of only $700 Margarita was able to start a small breakfast restaurant in the city of Managua. Her son Marcelo, age 6, suffers from a learning disability and would often take her attention away from her business. Skate. Now donated a board to Marcelo to keep him occupied and out of his mother's hair. Both were so grateful and smiling ear to ear!
